Screamed the headline to the article on ‘misbehaviour’ of a coach. The Sports Authority of India swung into action & terminated the contract of a national sprint team chief coach R.K. Sharma ,when a top woman cyclist accused him.
Swift action is very much appreciated. So many future young women are saved from the trauma. In 2020, IE reporters over a span of 10 years found 45 complaints of sexual harassment. 29 against coaches, of which five were penalised with pay cut, contracts of two terminated & suspension of one! Rest of them fell on deaf ears.
The situation is grave but what is serious is the offender goes scot free. The sports scenario of the country is beginning to look up when such instances make us rethink.
Quick action is good .What is required is strict rules to rule out such treatment given to the young women. The mind set needs to be changed. Mental & emotional pressure, nervous breakdowns & anxiety are found in their accounts. How can they focus??
Many of them are minors, their safety is of prime importance. If measures are taken timely, such behaviours won’t happen & the atmosphere will be healthy. Hardwork will pay off.
We will see the real shine on the medals & reflection on their faces!
