O Ramji, Mera piya ghar aaya… a beautiful song picturised on the eternal beauty Madhuri Dixit is a treat. But not the movie. ‘Yarana’ made in 1995 is loosely based on the American film ‘Sleeping with the enemy’ starring Julia Roberts.
‘Agni sakshi’ with Manisha Koirala, ‘Daraar’ by Juhi Chawla had the same theme. But besides, Agnisakshi none could reach the box office figures. In 1996, it was adjourned the first among top five ‘super hit’films. Scary Nana Patekar was the important factor.
An abusive husband is the common theme. The audience were all for the wife who is the victim. From the 90s the world has changed to relishing the disintegration of a relationship. What can we say when it makes a live telecast???
Never ‘Heard’ of it before! Domestic violence is an offense that is seriously underrated. The victim hides & tolerates it. Washing the dirty linen in public is avoided, so the abuser gains confidence & continues. It is a mental illness, strengthened by a soft target close at home.
When will it change? When the lady takes a firm stand & raises her voice. It will take time but the change is bound to happen. This can’t go forever. Are we even humans??? The physical abuse with the verbal torture is so common, it is not even regarded as crime! But it is & should be taken as such.
Gradually but surely it will change. But we may not live to see it happen! At least the future generations will be growing healthy & in a abuse free world. Amen.
