A 2022 Korean drama which revolves around people against the backdrop of Jeju island. Presently streaming & having only two episodes to watch it has garnered attention. From the first frame as Kim Woo bin wakes up, brushes his teeth & drives his truck to the shore, it is sombre. The hard life of the people who sell their wares & the daily market.
I was disappointed at Woo bin’s name coming at the fag end of the cast. His face has grown gaunt & his hair appear to be thinner. After combating with his disease salute to his indomitable spirit. I wish him all the luck.
Jeju island has the beautiful beach & location very often used in Korean dramas. USP being the cherry blossoms, escape from the city is also very common. ‘You are My destiny’ has the wealthy heir , Lee Gun, confronting the timid ‘post it’ girl, Jang Na -ra, in front of her mother. It was hilarious.
“Warm & Cozy” has Yoo Yeon seok opening his own restaurant on the island. Kang So-ra meets him there. First because she thought they were twins & later because she needs money. She starts working in his restaurant.
In ‘Our Blues’ Han Ji -min as Lee Young ok is a flirty first year haenyeo. ‘Warm & Cozy’ also deals with this occupation of harvesting a variety of sea life from the ocean. The ladies disliked him for his high & mighty way of handling but Kang So-ra changes all. She is compassionate & liked by all.
Running away to Jeju as in “Run on’ or honeymooning in Jeju is also as planned in ‘Sweet & Sour’. Recently ‘Forecasting love & weather’ had Song Kang banished to Jeju island to the centre of the typhoon. He gets injured & then his father, Park Min young, Yoon bak all fly there. The airport there helps in such situation.
In ‘Love ft. Marriage & Divorce’ had Dr Shin fly to jeju for a conference. He meets A mi & her friends who are travelling to be with Song won’s brother. This chance encounter also reveals that all three of them are involved with married men.
In ‘Blood’ Dr Yoo Ri ta was saved from the attack of a pack of wolves by Dr Ji sang when young. She had lost her parents there. The traumatic experience shadows her entire life.
Jeju in ‘Our Blues’ in contrast is refreshing & adding meaning to so many people staying there. It is their very life !
