Amar Prem

(Trans. immortal love) is a Hindi feature film made in 1972. Directed by Shakti Samanta. It is a remake of the Bengali film Nishi Padma (1970)

The film portrays the decline of human values & relationships. The boy living in the neighbourhood loves the motherly courtesan. Against the backdrop of falling relationships it stands alone as a jewel.

As an adult he searches for her & brings her home. The unlikely trio of the courtesan, her client & the child in the neighbourhood made for some memorable moments to be cherished forever.

It is never the budget or the starcast, never the story alone that gives us a hit. ‘Bawarchi’ released along with the film, another gem by Hrishida did not do well at the box office. But ‘Amar prem’ excelled in all quartets. Still does. Hats off to Panchamda.

Nothing extraordinary & yet it calls for watching over & over again. That is the magic.
