The title was fetching. Without reading anything about it I wanted to see it for myself. It is a 2021 psychological drama written & directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. Based on a novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante.
Film stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Dagmara Dominczyk, Ed Harris with others. The woman in the film aaaare given a role but they go beyond & we wonder if it is them or the characters they are playing.
Middle aged college professor & noted translator Leda Caruso goes to greece to enjoy her holiday. There she meets Nina, a young mother who has a three year old daughter Elena. Not wishing to get mixed up with others on the beach, Leda keeps her distance. But when Elena goes missing ,she also goes on the search & finds Elena.
It brings them closer. Secrets are revealed. Moving away from her grown daughters was a conscious decision but the past can never be forgotten. A woman can never forget her children.
With the events happening in front of us , so many hidden thoughts are coming to the fore. Our actions are dictated by them.
Because she is alone people assume so many things , all untrue. Why can’t a woman travel alone?? Why should she be responsible for her children always? Grown up children like their independence but want her to be a fall back, a plan B ??
A good film. It makes you think of so many women around you. In Marathi it’s said, ‘A woman is a wife for a moment but a mother for ages!’ how apt!
