Having finished all 6 episodes I am wondering what went wrong. Gurinder Chadha’s earlier works like ‘Bend It like Beckham’ had a zing to it. The protagonist was just like any other girl who wishes to play. Her family wants to marry her off.
John Beecham being a straight forward man, a widower, is late in catching our attention. Something about him is distant. We sympathize with him but cannot decide if he is really morally upright & we will go all the way with him.
A rouge like “Vincenzo’ captures our heart too fast. Knowing he is a bad fellow we begin loving him. But John in jail, we are aware of his helplessness but not desperate enough to free him. He may die but we are not moved by the pathos. I am unable to put my finger but something is a miss.
The cliffhanger end demands a second season but none is forthcoming. We are again not really very upset about it. ‘Moon lovers’ I wish they would consider a next season, the leads are in our hearts. I endured IU’s ‘Persona’ but did not complete because it is not her!! & it is not Hae Soo!!!
It is the character that makes us wait. The dialogue, thoughts, all of it. A better written character shines through. Remains in the heart forever!
