Princess Mako

The princess is the first child & elder daughter of Prince Fumihito & Princess Kiko. She married Kei Komuro, a lawyer, on 26th October 2021. As the result of her marriage, she gave up her imperial title & left the imperial family. It is required by the Imperial household law.

After a lot of turmoil in the news sections, the Princess married Kei Komuro following submission at the local ward office. Her paternal aunt, Sayako, Princess Nori & other princesses who have married a commoner in recent decades have lost their titles. They became a commoner upon marriage.

Marrying a royal elevated your status in the good old times. Good money, name, fame are the benefits of being royalty. But the household law doesn’t uphold these methods.

She is the first member of the Imperial family to forgo an official wedding ceremony & a gift of money from the government. We should appreciate her stand of remaining firm about her decisions.

If her mother-in-law got a gift of money or she paid for his tuition fees, should be left to them. They are family & I believe accounts should be left out. Considering that she will lose all, her husband & the Princess have been firm about their decision. Why not leave them alone? If they shift in a one bedroom flat or a studio apartment,it shouldn’t matter.

‘Not a Fairytale’ as the title read in the Indian Express, truly she has a rough road ahead. But together they will see to it. The first commoner to marry a Japanese royal was the present Empress Emerita Michiko. After marrying Emperor Emeritus Akihito in 1959 became a symbol of modernisation. The public affectionately call her “Mitchy”

Mako did not get this opportunity for acceptance of her choice, but she might just find more peace. Bless her!
