Crime stories: India Detectives

The last story in the series is ‘The Stolen Baby’. A baby is not missing but kidnapped from the parents. They are very poor. The youngest kid, a daughter is 1 year & 8 months old. They stay below the bridge & the father is a balloon seller. How they manage to feed their six children & stay afloat is a miracle.

The father, Arjun knows David. For three days he lives with him. Suddenly they are visited by two young men on a bike & David says his friend has lost their baby recently. They pick up the child & drive away.

In the police station they believe Arjun must have struck a deal, selling his child. Due to the criminal records they come to know that Arjun & David know each other from their time in jail. Without his wife knowing, Arjun must have got the money. She is pining over her lost kid. 7 months pregnant with the next child she visits the police station to get some good news.

Four policemen are deployed for the task. The delay may cost the life of the kid. David’s address is not known. Tracing him is tough. But they manage. He tells them his friends will meet near a temple. In the secluded place there are two temples. But the people there seem to be normal devotees. Really praying. No occult practices are seen.

The search is futile. The deputy commissioner had beefed up the search to four teams but no result. The case remains unsolved. The file enters the record room. The sub-inspector Rupa is optimistic that she will not let this case weigh heavy on her mind. Many more cases need urgent attention.

The unfinished story leaves us uneasy & many questions unanswered. The series is on the spot, the camera leaving no space for speculation, the workings of the police in detail & the stark reality… it is one of the very well documented one with real people. Kudos to all of them who work so hard to make our lives so easy!
