Dying for Protection the title of the story reveals it all. A woman in her 40s is killed in her house. Her son is away at his friend’s. He comes back to see his mother dead. Blood is all over. He shouts for help.
Four sisters but not close. The deceased had left her husband. 18 year old son is living with her. His alibi is checked. From the phone records, his story tallies. He is let off the hook.
They come across her former lover but he has not seen her . His story checks out. Then searching her house, police come across a bag of condoms in the kitchen. She is or was a sex worker. The main bus station at Majestic is then on the list. CCTV footage is checked. They also question the other ladies.
The sub-inspector is a lady. She says she had admiration for the work of the police which prompted her to follow this profession. She hates the women in the flesh trade. Dirty & filthy. It is her first murder case.
The last day footage shows a man following her to her place. They came in the same rickshaw. He follows her in. Police zero in on this last client. But his face is not seen. They alert her friends at Majestic. Finally, the police nab him.
He is a man who followed Manjula on the fatal day. Mukunda, has a sick wife & wanted to release his tension. But they got in an argument over a condom & the crime was committed.
The sub- inspector then says I felt very bad for all the ladies. Their men couldn’t provide for their wives or children, sick parents compel them to this age old trade. So sad. No education, poverty, helplessness led to such extreme measure. She says it changed my view. I now feel for them. In the police station they arrange a meal for them. She also makes the ladies to download the Suraksha app which will help them to get help from the police.
Her husband cares for their children so that she can do her job. He lives his dream through her. The case opened a vision & made her more aware of the situation around. She is more sympathetic now. Each experience in our lives is meant to learn something. Something new, different, making us a better person. If you are good, it makes you better.
