It is a 2018 Hindi romantic drama written & directed by Kanwal Sethi. It stars Shefali Shah & Neeraj Kabi in the lead. Two middle aged people, a famous star & another a restaurateur fall in love with each other.
It was originally written in German by Sethi. He is a Indo-German. It was later translated in English & Hindi. It won the best project award in Work-in-progress Lab at the Film Bazaar in Goa & later won other awards. ( I liked this term, Work-in-progress, it is exactly that. It is almost there, but not quite!)
It does reminds us of “Lunch box” but the end there was unsettling, disturbing. Here it remains a loose end, for us to fill in. Does she imagine him there or is he really with her?? But it’s good to see that she starts living for herself.
After her son’s wedding, she is free to live on her own. The freedom denied to her is now hers. Finally. She may like to have a partner with her or get lost in her own thoughts! Shefali has expressed that now she is being offered meaningful roles, that’s true. She looks gorgeous in cotton sarees & her big eyes convey everything that she means.
The lighting & camera work could have been better. Sometimes due to the dim lighting it looks unnecessarily gloomy. The supporting cast does good work. Rasika Dugal could have made her father say things that he is thinking of. The most striking scene of all is when Tara Shetty ie Shefali visits him on an impulse & finds many people around him. He tries to gather his thoughts & introduces her. ‘ She cooks’ The moment the words are out of his mouth he realises he has made a blunder & the smile on her face disappears. She is watching him stunned. Nothing can make up for the insult in front of so many people. It stings.
The sensitive film ‘Sir’ also has a slow burning romance but it is very well executed. Without going overboard & maintaining their space it is remarkable. The best I have come across. I had been apprehensive but I shouldn’t have. It has everything just perfect!
