The greats who shaped our lives… are our teachers. Your mother being your first Guru, the rest follow. On the 5th of September we celebrate the birth anniversary of one of the great teachers our country has produced. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.
If we walk back to the olden times, we have Chanakya. One of the best teachers who selflessly brought out the best in his pupil. He groomed him to be one of the greatest kings in the annals of history, Chandragupta Maurya.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak. He taught his students the magic of mathematics along with the spirit for freedom, with a team of his colleagues. The walls of the Fergusson College or Deccan College have their aura. It feels great to just walk the walk that they have stepped on!
Vivekanand. The disciple of the spiritual Guru, Ramkrishna Paramhansa, travelled to Chicago to attend the conference of the religions. His speech is immortal. He was following the orders of his guru, who wished people to know of his country & its thoughts. ‘Awake & Arise’ his slogan to the youth was clear.
APJ Abdul Kalam. A teacher among teachers. I believe we are fortunate to have Radhakrishnan as our first Vice President & APJ, a renowned scientist as our President. He always wished to die while delivering a lecture & he did. He collapsed on stage, was rushed to the hospital & was declared dead. What a death!
Savitribai Phule. After her marriage to Jyotiba she finished her learning. He was her first teacher. Then both started a school in Pune. Girls education was an alien concept. She had to endure the bad mouthing & stone pelting, dung being thrown at her. But it strengthened her resolve. Jyotiba stood firm & had the best teacher with him.
Going through a social struggle to make education an everyday thing so many of them had to spend their entire lives for the cause. It’s time to salute them again on this day. Remember them & take their blessings.
“Come September” & it’s a season of celebrating all of those who have made our lives meaningful.
