It is a 2021 British romantic drama. It is directed by Augustine Frizzell. It is based on Jojo Moyes’s 2012 novel of the same name. It stars Felicity Jones,Callum Turner, Joe Alwyn, Nabhaan Rizwan & Shailene Woodley.
Ellie, a journalist has to write an article on the recently deceased editor of her paper when she comes across a trove of letters by J to “Boot”. In London 1965, the story unfolds. Jennifer Stirling is recovering from amnesia. Her wealthy husband is treating her like a jewel.
Foreign correspondent Anthony O’hare arrives to interview Larry at their luxurious beach resort in France. Called on a business trip, Anthony is thrown in her company again & again. They start a whirlwind affair. He is divorced & his son lives with his wife.
He proposes she run off to New york with him. She is scared but decides to go. On the way she meets with an accident. He thinks she has rejected him. She has amnesia.
The archives person Rory & Ellie get to know each other, while going through the letters. They develop feelings for each other,The past unhappy relationships are forgotten. They long for love & be loved but disbelieve that it is possible.
In the present day, Ellie acts as a go-between for Jenny & Boot. He writes a last letter inviting her to their favourite spot, Postman’s Park. It’s late. Ellie thinks she is not going to come. But she does. Rory & Ellie watch from a distance.
Finally they get to be together. Her husband had told her that Boot is dead. So when they meet again in 1969, she refuses to go with him for her two year daughter. Then she comes to know of Boot leaving, she rushes over but is too late.
The story spans more than 50 years & yet remains as fresh as ever. She is ready to be called an adulteress but her husband lying to her is what gets to her. Defiantly when she confronts her husband is one of the best scenes I have witnessed in recent years.
It is worth watching.
