It is based on the best selling novel of 2007 by Jung Eun-gwol’s “The Lives of Sungkyunkwan Confucian Scholars”. It was well received & the leads won many a awards.
After having drinks, Lee Sun joon is swoony & Kim Yoon shik carries him on his back, somehow. The student body president is standing by the doors & wants to punish those who break the curfew. He can see the duo coming & yet he orders to close the gates. Kim Yoon shik bangs on the doors. But is of no use. The doors remain closed.
Inside while inspecting the inmates standing by their doors, Kim Yoon shik comes out. All are taken aback. He informs that Lee sun joon is not well & sleeping. Indeed he is ! They make it in time with the help of their senior,Gu Yong-ha, who lets them through the secret path.
Later Lee Sun joon starts taking his clothes off, so Kim Yoon shik takes refuge in the corridor. Moon Jae shin finds him sleeping there in the morning. He wakes him up. They enter to see Lee Sun joon up & going through his book in the room.
There is to an archery competition. Lee Sun joon takes it on himself to teach Yoon shik. The student body president, Ha in soo, had placed an apple on Yoon shik’ s head to scare him. Lee Sun had chided him & Moon had helped Yoon shik away. But after meeting the professor who discovers Yoon shik is a girl, Yoon shik is not able on concentrate on his arrows.
Gu Yong ha is intrigued why the professor did not bring in a physician or let them meet Yoon shik. Also there are no entries made in the record. The professor asks him to return the book & questions if he will like to be punished with ten lashings. Curiosity can kill. From the initiation incident, he is overly intrigued by Yoon shik. He had also tried to intimidate him by saying Moon is not coming so you can spend the night alone with Lee Sun.
His behaviour is mischievous but he tends to help too. When the food brought by Yoon shik was thrown, he was the first one to lift it & eat it. Also he had encouraged others to taste it. I am definitely loving it.
The genre is different but the person is naturally loveable here. Enjoying Song joong ki, more than his deadpan expression in “Vincenzo’, which had him hiding from himself, from his mother & from his love also.
So many period dramas have come later, but the flavour of this drama is unique. Never have the leads worked together again. But they form a formidable team here! Would love to have them again in one show!!
