A beautiful song from the 1983 Hindi movie , Sadma, that remains with you forever. It’s music by Ilayaraja ( actually the king of unforgettable music, now his mantle is taken up by his disciple A R Rahman. The same who got an oscar for his score in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ ) of course, the awards are encouragement but the work that is nominated is also as good.
Lyrics by none other than Gulzar, what can I say. The frames come to life with his words! Another of his superb string of pearls to cherish forever.. & ever..
Ae Zindagi gale laga le… Humne bhi tere har ek gam ko gale se lagaya hai, hai na ? This last ‘hai na?’ by Suresh Wadkar touches the heart. Kamal Hassan as the caring youth to the child-like Sridevi . Pairing which is too perfect. If I may say as in the cliche.. pitch perfect. Many fans later still found shades of Sadma in her acting.
Sadma lit. means Shock. You get it at the end of the movie & how. Only Kamal Haasan can carry off such a role with the required amount of decency & maturity. He himself has confessed later how a teenage boy could take care alone, of a teenage girl with low IQ. Without any scenes which may make us cringe or going overboard he manages to be there, ever helpful without crossing any limits, it can happen only in a South Indian movie. The directors are so sensitive that it easily translates onto the screen.
Watch any movie of the pair & the full potential has never bee tested as it was in Sadma. Sridevi is beautiful, drop gorgeous in many movies later but nothing compares with her innocence in Sadma. Kamal Hassan in Hindi movie ‘Saagar’ is wasted. It is totally a Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia starrer.
Humne bahane se, chupke zamane se… palkon ke parde mein ghar bhar liya… tera sahara mil gaya hai zindagi… tera sahara mil gaya hai zindagi…
Ghar bhar liya.. chupke se.. that what cannot be announced or revealed.. so tough.. Normally the duo cannot contain their joy & want to announce it from the roof tops but the situation is so delicate here. She is 18 but is just 8 mentally. He is contained that she is with him!
Chhota sa saya tha.. Ankho me aaya tha.. humne do boondon se maan bhar liya… humko kinara mil gaya hai zindagi.. that what comes my way I am satisfied.. I feel we should take a leaf out of his book. Whatever & whicher Everest we reach in our lives , we remain unsatisfied. Wanting something more… what? We aren’t even sure but more!
Suresh Wadkar’s voice has a timber apart from other singers. His classical base helps. When he is at the antara he gives a slight shift & the two verses become, feel different. Listen to his ‘Megha re megha re’ from ‘Pyaasa Sawan’ only he could have sung the way he did. Or his ‘Omkar swarupa..’ has all his devotion poured out. Among all the Ganapati songs this Marathi song has a unique flavour.
