It is a 2020 Marathi film by Chaitanya Tamhane. It is just about 2 hours long. But it could have been shorter to have the impact. The atmosphere is dark & so is the mood. It reminds of “Damul’ which had a slow pace & dark visuals. One had to strain eyes to see what was happening.
Both the spectators.. my mom & husband complained of low lighting. The actors being classical singers is a plus. But… that is the highlight.
Sumitra Bhave’s voice as Maii lets him on the secrets of life in general & how to face life in particular. He is no genius. But a sincere student who helps his master in old age. Bathes, by his side whenever the need arises. Massages his back, or legs as required. Pays his medical bills but is not a success in life. His classes for students help him to make ends meet.
He watches the meteoric rise of a singer on a TV show but his life remains mundane. How classical music fails to earn money & yet his devotion remains unwavered. The thought is fine, the execution not so much.
A fine opportunity wasted. Tamhane’s ‘Court’ was more appealing.
