A 2006 Hindi film by Nagesh Kukunoor is a delight to watch. It stars Ayesha Takia, Gul Panag & Shreyes Talpade as the lead actors. It is an official adaptation of the Malayalam film made in 2004, which was well received.
It is a story of two women who come from different backgrounds & fate brings them together. Meera, a young woman who becomes a widow soon after her marriage is trapped by tradition. Zeenat has the daunting task of saving her husband’s life who is on trial for murder.
Bahuroopiya, Shreyas Talpade, helps her to reach Meera. She is the one holding the ‘Dor’ to Zeenat’s hopes. The relation that develops betwwen the two is worth watching. Without going overboard it is so delicately handled.
I suddenly remembered this film because of Sanya Malhotra. She is the young widow Sandhya in Pagglait. But she has her dear friend with her. She has no tears initially due to shock. Later as she comes across the photograph of her husband’s girlfriend in one of the cupboards, she has some one with her to speak her mind!
This story is different yet in those 13 days people start talking about re-marriage! Of course the 50 lakhs insurance money is at the heart of things. Sandhya not having a say in the family matters is the same, remains the same!
Both the films are progressive, making the protagonist decide for herself. Noy everyone is this fortunate around us.
