In Korean lit.Like a Butterfly is a South Korean television series that premiered on March 22, 2021. It stars Park in-hwan, Song Kang, Na Moon-hee & Hong Seung-hee. It is based on Daum webtoon of the same name written by Hun & illustrated by Ji-min.
The first episode brought tears to the eyes. It is beautiful beyond words. An old man of 70 aspires to learn Ballet. He has worked for years for his family. He had given up his dream because of his father. But now he watches a young man dance, Song Kang practicing & he wishes to dream again.
He is shown in a funeral house biding goodbye to yet another friend . When the friends gather they realise that they have duties & meet only at such occasions. One of his friend remarks , Why there are no tears now to which he replies, we are used to saying final goodbyes!
One of his friend is in the old age home where he goes often with candies or anything that his friend desires. But his wife is bitter. She says he should have been better with his family members when young, now nobody visits him! His friend was a sailor & had dreamt of owning his own ship, Forward. But now the time is gone.
The friend jumps from the window & exits the world leaving behind a handwritten letter. Now he decides to pursue his dream. He goes to Mr Ki & requests him to teach him. Mr Ki advices him to join Ballet classes. His emotions get to the teacher/ coach & he asks his student, Song Kang to teach him!
It was so full of hope! Age is only a number but unnecessarily we take life too seriously. The happiness in living every moment & enjoying all the small joys in life, we have forgotten to do it. The old man may or may not learn to dance but it gives us hope to look forward to the tomorrows beckoning you.
I simply loved the concept & the simplicity with which the subject is put forth. Taking to the sky like a butterfly … anytime! the simple lesson is, if a 70 year old can, why can’t you? Dream on…
