Zihaal-e-miskin

From Hindi film ‘Gulami’ a 1985 featuring Mithun Chakraborty & Anita Raaj among others. The words in Urdu that roll off like makhan & yet fascinate you forever! I remember them riding atop a crowded bus & completing the song. They are together & yet maintain a distance that is more alluring.

Today’s films have lost this magic. They are bold, brash, in your face & the sublime feel is missing. We give everything on a platter when are the gen x really going to appreciate the beauty of the unsaid words?!

Zihal-e miskin Makun ba-Ranjish…sung by Lata Mangeshkar & Shabbir Kumar is a gem that reminds us of the lost era. With the star cast as solid as Dharmendra,Smita Patil these stars were overshadowed but the song remains with you.

Bechara dil hai… sunai deti hai jiski dhadkan tumhara dil ya hamara dil hai…

When the song is being sung by someone else in the background there is full scope for the emotions to run wild. It is also imperative that the eyes do most of the work. Such songs are an excellent examples of how good the stars are. In ‘Zanjeer’ the lead pair is watching the song-dance or in ‘Kuch kuch hota hai’ the song shows Geeta ma but the emotions are elsewhere. Kajol at her best.

“Raja Hindustani” shows Pratibha singing with Kalpana Iyer dancing to ‘Pardesi..pardesi’ but the lead pair shows the pain or should I say hides the pain from the dominating father Suresh Oberoi of separation. If parents agree that they don’t own their children many problems would be solved. Life would be so much easy.

Woh aake pehlu mein aaise baithe ke sham rangeen ho gayi hai… Who else but Gulzar can write such verses that are better picturised or better written…I wonder!

One of the most under rated stars.. who could emote, dance & look the role in which he was cast. After ‘Mrigya’ nobody can have any doubts about Mithun’s ability. He was type cast the G9 movies like ‘Suraksha’. His dancing ability not explored further than ‘Disco Dancer’. His ability to carry off a film like “Pyar jhukta nahi” with Padmini Kolhapure made it a smash hit. But it brought in more movies with the same co-star & roles not really challenging.

Anita Raaj also disappeared early & did not get her due. Lady luck was not on their side & we missed a pairing that could have been a super hit.
