I have been meaning to write about them for a couple of days but just couldn’t. Rather than the main film when the appearance is remembered most is that of the guest! Many times I wonder if it is because they are not paid, they appear for being friends or old time sake or an assurance in the next film!
Whatever the reason we get an excellent performance to watch. We are more than happy for it! I will start with my favourite actor, Mr Amitabh Bachchan ! Lets leave all his appearances in Hrishida’s films. He was pivotal in “Andha Kanoon” but the story revolved around Hema Malini,Rajinikanth,whenever he appeared on the streets there was a gasp in the crowds.
In the latest film”English Vinglish” he meets Sridevi in the plane & builds her confidence. Once she reaches the airport in the US & parts ways. We wait for him to appear again which he never does.
In her very own film,”Chandni” she has the entire floor but just a song ,’Lagi aaj sawan ki phir wo jhadi hai’ Juhi Chawla shines. We wait for her in more scenes which she doesn’t. She got the entire film,’Darr’ later.
In ‘Deewana Mastana’ she had Anil Kapoor & Govinda eating out of her hands. But she favours none. In the end Salman Khan makes an appearance.
Abhishek is another actor that makes appearances to die for. not ‘Bunty & Babli’ Or his ‘Guru’ but his appearance in ‘Salaam Namaste’ as a doctor in the final scenes was hilarious. If you were in a theatre you would watch the crowd going crazy. The lead pair of saif Ali & Preity Zinta is forgotten!
More whistles in ‘Lage raho Munnabhai’ when he appears & says he will marry .Without caring for the superstitious Khurana with an extra “K” he marries Diya Mirza. In the final scene he is very much alive & posing with her smiling with a child in his arms! His entry brought the roof down I remember forgetting that it was a Sanjay Dutt film!
And who will forget Shashi Kapoor in “Ijazat’ where the entire film has Rekha, Nasiruddin Shah, Anuradha Patel in a love triangle. As the door of the waiting room opens & he barges in ,delight writ large at seeing her, no one I mean absolutely no one could be there! If not him… the question doesn’t arise! It had to be him!!
Finally in “Dil to Pagal hai’ the show ends. All is well. The lead pair is together when in the wings Akshay Kumar asks the important question, ‘Kya aap ki shaadi ho gayi?’ to Karishma Kapoor. Her expression is priceless! So is our amusement.
