Pankh hote to udd aati re…

From ‘Sehra’ the evergreen song means something different on the day you hear it. The old songs have this magic inherent that they haunt you the entire day. Without knowing you are there in the age when you heard it on radio. In the bus, traveling to college or while crossing the street the bars were heard from the dingi little, musty place where besides tea so many things were shared.

When in college I hardly remember any canteen visit or even venturing through the college main gate. I don’t think I was invisible but how I wished nobody could see me when I was down or needed to be left alone. The voices or the smells too assaulted the senses as much as you try to avoid & there is simply no escape.

Sometimes the same street appears too long & never ending. The smiles very oily & the jokes too outrageous. To be in the crowd & safe you endure it all. On the day that you need some solace they are there for you unknowingly. Their presence makes for the void you feel within.

The fantasy in the lyrics again, Pankh hote to udd aati re rasiya o balma… doesn’t he have work of his own ? or is he only there for you to command? Then again in dreams any thing is possible & hence the ‘Wings’ to fly to fly high. To go anywhere with the speed of the mind. Just fantasising & being happy at the possibility is bliss itself!
