The bunch of four different stories remain with you long after the screen goes black. The first one by Karan Johar puts up the gay angle in view. The protagonist is friends with his boss, Rani Mukerjee. On his birthday she calls him over for dinner & introduces her husband, Randeep Hooda. They find they share a love for old golden hit Hindi Songs & music. Avinash, Saqib Saleem is at or has made peace with his being a homosexual but discovers that her husband hasn’t.
Avinash manages to bring out all his emotions to unnerve you. The other two being veterans as compared to him fail to rise above him.
In the second story by Dibakar Banerjee with Nawazuddin Siddiqui is about a failed stage star trying to make two ends meet.He is on way for the job of a security when he learns another boy has been hired. On his way back he goes to watch a shoot in progress. He gets chosen for a scene which has only one word,’Eh!” but he does it successfully. He rushes home without picking up his payment.
His stories have been repeated often but today he has a new story for his sick daughter. There are no words but his expressions are wonderful. It goes to show what a great actor he is!
In the third story by Zoya Akhtar , Sheela ki Jawani, a young boy aspires to be a dancer like Sheela. He idolises Katrina Kaif. His father wants to become a sportsman. He is enrolled in football training. He dresses up & dances when his parents are not around. He gets caught once but is going after his dream secretly now.
His sister wants to go for the trip to the badami caves. In the car she says , “Dad they are so old by next year they may fall!” Did I just love it! Really children do have a way with their words!! Her brother helps her with the piggy banks but the money is just short by Rs 250. He comes up with an idea to have a ticketed show in the neighbourhood & he dances to his favourite tunes.
The fourth story by Anurag Kashyap is about the journey from Allahabad to Mumbai to meet Amitabh Bachchan. Sudhir Pande, an ailing father makes his son go on a journey to meet the superstar as he had made it to meet Dilipkumar. It was a jar of honey then now it is the homemade murabba.
Meeting the star & increasing the longevity of life. How life has come a full circle! The story is a tad too lengthy good editing could have made it brisk, crisp & interesting. It has a glimpse of the star in his house.
Finally celebrating 100 years of cinema with all the big stars is a treat. The song is similar to the one in ‘Rab ne bana di jodi which goes..’Har janam mein, rang badal ke ..khwabon ke pardon pe hum khil ke.. hum hain rahi pyaar ke …Phir milenge chalta chalte….
A grand finale to the ode to the century of the silver screen here!
