It was advertised so well & looking at the Indian faces we decided to see what it was. To my satisfaction it has all that it promises. No less & no more!Looking at the star cast it promised to be more, which it did not.
Isabel runs an orphanage in India. She is invited to a wedding by an philanthropist,Theresa. Her daughter, Grace is getting married. Once she arrives she learns that Grace is her daughter that she had given up for adoption. Oscar has not given up the child & has raised her. Now he is married to Theresa & also has two boys aged eight.
Theresa learns of her terminal illness & plans to bring in Isabel to take care of the family. She has planned to tell about her illness to the family after the wedding. She assures Isabel 20 billion for her orphanage with one condition that she will shift to New York. I remembered ‘Step mom’ & the two brilliant actress, Sarah Sarandon & Julia Roberts. A very good movie that one can’t forget easily.
Inspite of having a moving story it fails to move you as it should. The actors are good but it fails to keep you glued to your seat. I fail to pinpoint the flaw but there sure is. Julianne Moore is one of the best actresses we have. This is her production & also the lead. It could surely have been better.
The 2006 appears to be better received by the audience. The protagonist is a man, helping street children in India & gets invited to the wedding of a businessman who offers him 4 million with a condition. ( I seriously have objection to the portrayal of India as the land of the poor. ‘City of Joy’, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, or such. There are hundreds of things that can be boasted of as India or being Indian. The other image consistently is of Gandhi. Good he is the father of the nation but the nation has its own identity. One can’t equate Gandhi with the Nation or the Nation with Gandhi only. India is much more than that!)
