It is a 2015 psychological thriller that stars Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman with a stellar performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor who shines through every scene. A 2009 Argentine film of the same name & based on the same novel had been very well received so the comparison is inevitable.
A counter-terrorism agent for FBI,Ray & his friend Jess meet new ADA Claire.Jess & Ray get a call for an unknown female body in a dumpster. It is found to be Jess’s daughter. There is bleach used to destroy DNA evidence. While investigating the terrorist angle Ray comes across a photograph where a young man is staring at the young girl.Marzin is arrested & Claire taunta him. Ray beats him which leads to Marzin’s release.
After his release his van is captured but gets burnt by officer Reggie. Now 13 years later Ray returns to LA, reunites with Claire, who is now DA. Jess is her top investigator. She has become asocial after her daughter’s death. Ray finds a man Cole he believes is Marzin & follows him. In the shoot out, Reggie is killed. At her house Jess confesses that she killed Marzin shortly after Ray left LA.
In her barn Ray discovers that she has kept Marzin alive. He pleads Ray to make her talk to him. Ray leaves his gun & starts digging in the field outside. There is a gun shot & Jess peers through the window. Ray takes a moment to look at her & continues digging. Now the case gets the closure. The end wordless & effective.
