Written & directed by Anvita Dutt this film has the ‘chudail’ as the central character. The other two films that are produced by Anushka Sharma, ‘Phuleri’ & ‘Pari’ also had this enigma in common. But the ‘bhoot ‘in ‘Phuleri was cute. May everyone meet such a ghost! In the white garb Anushka Sharma looked so nice sometimes better than the main heroine!( If I may say so.)
‘Pari’ was too creepy. The poster & trailer was only for those who can enjoy such a genre. Not for me. I am not into Night Shyamalan’s films for this very reason. The music also reminds me of those hideous scenes & the reason I can’t sleep. Who will forgo the beauty sleep over the shadow work, webs, screams & haunted castles!
Here, Bulbbul the child bride gets married to a rich older man. She is friendly with her brother-in -law who is her age. Growing up she faces situations that never come to light. Her husband leaves the house, she is the sole incharge now. How women turn on the younger ones, a threat to their authority? Her sister-in-law is no help. Probably the absence of elders in the family unhinges it?
Anvita is fascinated by the folk tales & she says there are so many that she has yet to write about. ‘Ulte paav wali chudail’…. the mysterious deaths that take place & nobody to blame, so it falls on the invisible witch that roams at night! To make things fall into place & make things right is not so easy. We are taking into account the living beings around who have their own way at looking at things.
The pain, insult, injury, humiliation that the growing bride faces given the responsibilities of the household at a tender age. Here I remember the younger sister or a companion sent from her family till the young bride adjusts to the new way of life. The bride crying for her ‘Pishi maa’ who has left her sleeping. The husband’s household now hers, but she is too young to realise it all.
A tragedy that could have been corrected anytime, averted certainly. But follows it’s course faithfully for our frustration to increase, accelerate. There are certain points in our life when the course can be corrected. There is no such thing as absolute. Mid way a change can take place, but needs that kind of motivation, guidance, advice surely. Most of us are lucky enough.
