Set in the period of the World War II it has a commendable performance by all the three actors.. Saif ali Khan, Shahid Kapoor & Kangana Ranaut. The film revolves around her as the fearless Miss Julia, a character based on the first ever stunt woman here, Fearless Nadia. She made her character in ‘Hunterwali’ timeless & memorable.
Kangana as usual dazzles. I had been in awe with her role in “Gangster” but in “Queen” she was just that ..the queen! Then came her ‘Tanu weds Manu’ where she plays Tanu! A girl who is set to marry an NRI( no less!) Manu, played by the eversweet Madhavan. He is one of those actors that the industry has always under rated. When he suddenly dies in ‘Rang de Basanti’ I kept wondering why? He was leading or set to lead a happy life with his girlfriend or fiance, why kill him?
The fiery Julia is set to go to Rangoon to entertain the army troops there. She wants her Mentor Mr Russi Billimoria, Saif Ali Khan to accompany her. But he drops out as his father fakes a heart attack. En route she is helped & cared for by Jamadar Mallik, Shahid Kapoor. They share a close relationship & a bond that grows with their journey together. Zulfi, who manages her costumes has hidden the sword which is to handed over to the INA.
After losing many faithfuls of the NIA in their group, finally Malik then Julia also are sacrificed. But Billimoria respects her last words & finishing of the last of the British troops hands over the sword to the NIA! Mission accomplished.
The movie had good reviews but failed at the boxoffice. The locations, cinematography are sheer art. In places it appears to be almost a western war movie & yet it fails to have us reverted to the seats. It lacks that zing.
