Hot Sweet Sour

A Turkish movie with two friends who decide to meet after 5 years to see if they still like each other. Just before the five years are up, she watches him on TV. He is contesting as a chef. She talks with him on phone & decides to go to Istanbul to meet him. She meets his fiancee & knows he is getting married.

They put her up in the guest room. She also comes up with the idea of having a boyfriend. When the five years are up, they meet at the cafe & he asks her again to marry him. He has been staging his marriage to test her. But she discovers she is losing sensation in her legs just like her mother & tells him that she is leaving. After a month he comes to know about her auto immune disease & visits her.

They know each other from childhood & he decides to stand by her forever. Without her illness why couldn’t it do with a happy end? Why do we have this craving for melodrama? After five years I had expected the story to finish instead it took a turn for the worst! Looking at different actors gives a slice of what is happening in the world around. The director’s feel for the tragedy & filming in a way where it is not teary, is the real skill. The editing, the locales, the blue ,clear sea are the assets. The snow in the end when the camera pans to the roof is significant.

Initially the emotions are hot. There is no doubt about how the story will unfold now. Later it is sweet as they find , love! It was always there but the realisation comes late. Then comes the stage when it all sours. He is a chef so using tastes to relate was unique. It was a predictable yet a decent closure.
