A drama by Saif Hyder Hassan. Arif Zakaria & Sonali Kulkarni in the lead. A relationship drama based on the life of two creative people. The wife is a singer & he is a director. It is heavily inspired by the life of film maker Guru Dutt & his singer wife Geeta Dutt. The Tata theater had the ads from almost a month.
The portrayal is good but it lacks the twists. The lacks the pain inherent in a relationship gone sour. If comparison be made Guru Dutt’s life was a story of success, supreme craftsmanship & concealed pain. That is not explored here. Geeta Dutt had huge respect for her husband that needed to be portrayed. She drinks but then her poise & dignity should remain.
The scene at the police station was just too much to handle. It could have been short or handled better. If a Guru Dutt had to direct it! It was all there yet something missing. That feeling could not be shrugged. Repeat the scenes from ‘Pyasa’ or ‘Kagaz ke Phool’ & find why they remain with you forever.
I definitely expected a better job than this. At least don’t compare it the lives of Guru Dutt & Geeta Dutt. Naming her as Bhavna & the actress Waheeda as Afsana is not enough. All the directors have been in love with their muses. Raj Kapoor or Dev Anand had their inspirations but Guru Dutt could not handle it. His death till date remains a mystery. May be it was a suicide, we don’t know.
His image remains untarnished & so is Geeta’s. Their lives are but speculation for us, no one knows for sure but the dignity needs to be maintained. Liking names or having rumours were taken seriously then. The film stars kept their private life private. Do you know when Ashok Kumar got married? No. It was a family matter & the fans need not know. You knew them on screen only. Those were the times.
Trying to emulate the 1950s then the details are not required. Only a hint is sufficient. Samajhne wale ko isshara kafi hai!
Discouraged by the attempt. Trying for better depiction today. Happy viewing!
