An excellent Marathi movie by Jabbar Patel.The film has Mohan Agashe & Smita Patil in the lead. Based on a book by G.N. Dandekar, set in the rural village of Sahyadris. It was a musical fare for the people. Hridaynath Mangeshkar at his best. But it was a box office disaster.
The story revolves around Nagya who wants to climb the peak(Lingoba) & drive away the queen bee. He does climb it but his win has a price! He is able to drive away the queen bee but loses his queen! The two narrators weave the tale for us. Experimentation got it the president’s silver medal for best feature film at the National film festival. Smita Patil is known for blending in the persona of the character she plays. Number of individual awards in her name are the testimony of the same. Her portrayal of ‘Chindhi’ is one of the best in her short career.
Mohan Agashe has played his character to the hilt. His movements, body language are just there! The supporting cast is good too. It is a memorable film for the critics & fans alike. Jabbar Patel became a household name with it.
The songs, ‘Jambhul piklya jhada khali..’ or ‘Mi raat takli ,Kaat takli bai…’ are the memorable hits. ‘Nabha utaru aale…’ have that haunting quality. Such songs when you hear in the morning entire day is lost in their repetition.
The plight of the thakars, their costumes, language, customs, make for an enriching experience. The glosses of today cannot cope with such rich stories & good acting. Truly a team effort!
