The film was good & so were all the songs. I am talking of ‘Saagar’ the comeback film of Dimple Kapadia. Her chemistry with Rishi Kapoor was legendary but after her marriage & two kids it was eagerly awaited. She did not disappoint! Along with the different shades of the sea, her moods have been captured so well!
Coming to the song it is introduction of Dimple to Rishi. They meet in a fair. More correctly they see each other in a fair & he walks up to the musicians in the tent & starts singing. She is sitting with her friend, Kiran Vairale,( one of the many actresses who had side roles forever! I love these sidey characters. they are full of life & never fail to cheer up the lead. In QSQT more than Juhi I had eyes for her friend who helps to run away from the wedding!) at a table.
Music by RD Burman & sung by Kishore Da it is one of the most beautiful of songs.The lyrics help the mood perfectly.’Chehra hai ya chand khila zulf ghaneri sham hai kya, Saagar jaisi aankhon wali yeh to bata tera naam hai kya?…
Tu kya jane teri khatir kitna hai betaab yeh dil, tu kya jane dekh raha hai kaise kaise khab yeh dil… Dil kehta hai tu hai yaha to jata lamha tham jaye, waqt ka dariya behta behte is manjar mein jam jaye….tune deewana dil ko banaya is dil par ilzam hai kya…saagar jaisi aankhon wali …. Dimple in her white midi, blow dried hair & huge earrings. She brought the styling of hair. She has worn only three sarees in the entire film. We counted. Rest are all dresses in plain colours, no print. Trying to find what is unique is in the dream sequence here they just get up their clothes don’t change only rest of the people disappear & the swings stop, the ferris wheel.. only both of them are running. The visuals do have that effect I still remember the shot vividly.
Ho aaj main tumse door sahi aur tu mujhse anjaan sahi, tera saath na pau to khair tera armaan sahi…he is new in this town hence doesn’t know her. She may or may not like him, he clarifies that…khair tera armaan sahi, this is great! Meri nahi to kisi ki nahi.. Bullets! Where does this thought come from? if the sentiment is so pure & so delicate how can violence be the answer?
Yeh armaan hai shor nahi ho, khamoshi ke mele ho…is duniya mein koi nahi ho hum dono hi akele ho, tere sapne dekh raha hun aur mera ab kaam hai kya….To be with her is the dream to be together is the dream & dreaming is the only option presently.
As he closes his eyes & then thanks the musicians, turns to leave. She has already left. But on the paper napkin she has written ‘Mona’. That is his only lead at present.More when we discus “Saagar”Happy listening!
