Chetan Bhagat’s novel that I completed in a couple of days. He is a popular Indian writer included in Time magazine’s list of world’s 100 most influential people in 2010. I had read his ‘Five point someone’ & liked it. Then I also read ‘ One night @ the call center’ which I had liked. The ease with which he writes puts the reader in a comfort zone.
This latest of his books is not a love story. The tag line reads as it is a unlove story! This I wanted to know! As I turned the pages & found a thriller, I was hooked. It is story about a IIT coaching class tutor in Chandan classes goes to wish his ex-girlfriend on her birthday. He goes in her hostel room climbing the mango tree to find her dead in her bed. He calls the police, her father, her boyfriend. He is taken to the police station as a suspect along with his friend, Saurabh who had accompanied him.
Both of them think that the watchman is wrongly put in jail. But if not him, then who is the real culprit? They set on the trail to investigate on their own & come to surprising facts. Their journey from Srinagar, Delhi, Hyderabad back to Delhi gives us the slice of the adventure. Chetan Bhagat has been successful in maintaining the suspence & giving the twists & turns when required.
I had read ‘The 3 mistakes of my life’ by then got used to his style. Many a times I felt he writes similar to Sydney Sheldon, the use of words & the word picture drawn, the technique is very similar. Only what I have always liked is the number of pages. The story is told in racy, interesting manner & finished before it gets too long. ‘2 States’ I liked the movie more than the book & ‘Revolution 2020’ I haven’t finished it yet. ‘Half Girlfriend’ I saw the movie & liked it. He may not be the best writer but he knows what people like to read!
What remains is ‘One Indian Girl’ that I plan to get hold of so I can be 100% sure of his writing in the last 14 years. The IIT & IIM campuses gave him the seed to elaborate on & he has been doing a very good job! He has also a Filmfare award for screenwriting under his belt! He started early so has lot of time to do much more.
Wishing him a very successful writing career. Happy reading!
