Sargam

It is a Hindi film with Rishi Kapoor & Jaya Prada. She starred in the Telugu film which was remade in Hindi. She became a star in south. She debuted in Hindi & found a larger audience. She is a mute dancer, illtreated by her step mother. She is helped by a musician Raju, played by Rishi Kapoor.

‘Sargam’ the name gives a hint. The musical journey that you embark on is memorable. The music is good so is the dancing. The choreography excellent. ‘Phul bane hai ghungru, ghungroo ban gaye phool…’ has the ‘ghungroos’ instead of flowers on the branches of the tree! If we go with the flow it is enjoyable , if we start to dissect then it may be not so enjoyable.

The film’s song ‘Dafli Wale’ remained at the top spot on Binaca Geetmala for it’s entire tenure & retired on the same spot. A rare feat as newer films keep adding up & the count down changes. The music won filmfare award for Laxmikant Pyarelal. The other songs include..’Hum to chale pardes’,”Koyal boli duniya doli’,’Parbat ke us paar’,’Ram ji ki nikli savari’ among others were equally popular. If we start Antakshari’ I am sure most of the songs will be sung in first few minutes.

Raju has been taught by her father & treats her with due respect. When he realises that she wants to be with him, he is shocked & wants the best for her. But she wants no better & bends him as she wishes. All through out she has no dialogue, no miracle happens. She remains mute but her dancing doesn’t require any introduction. With their introduction to Bharatanatyam most of the south actresses are accomplished dancers. They are well versed in the basics of makeup, getup only need training in Hindi. Take a look & you would be surprised by their achievements!

Rishi Kapoor like his uncle, Shammi Kapoor had lady luck on his side. He would introduce new actresses but remained in the top position himself. HIs popularity was never affected. Their charisma worked till the end. look at his latest films, he is the same, his old self!

In remembrance of the good, old times of our youth! Happy new dreams to you!
