Saath Saath

Another of the movies with Farooq Sheikh & Deepti Naval that was much appreciated by the youths. They had fresh look & their boy or girl-next -door image helped. The rich girl falls for the poor boy in college, for his principles. Raman Kumar’s film edited by David Dhawan has songs that are popular today!

‘Tum ko dekha to yeh khayal aaya’ as you watch the song it unfolds the story & if we look at the costumes they are what actually we wear! I don’t think they were thinking of budget here, but it required them to look natural. Not some manicured girl just out of the parlour & walking the campus!

‘zindagi dhoop tum ghana saaya…’ Javed Akhtar’s lyrics give them that realistic feel. What a concept. With the sunlight beaming on the face of Deepti, Farooq maintained his vulnerable look forever! We feel how will this gullible gent survive in this big world! After their marriage they set up their home. ‘Yeh tera ghar, yeh mera ghar…’ they are so lovey dovey makes us want them to stay the same. But …. harsh reality makes him compromise on his principles. She realises he is moving away from her. The comfort in their being together is lost.

Similar situation is created in ‘Chalte chalte’ the initial magic is gone & the sparks fly. The concept of ‘happy ever after ‘is overrated! To maintain the stage requires lot of effort from both sides. Everything is so easy initially till ‘atte dal ka bhav’ gives a reality check. Without letting in artificial or superficial endearments what is needed is the real care & honesty to make it work.

When she discovers he is going the wrong way she decides to leave him. He realises his mistake & corrects himself. A nudge in the right direction is helpful. This right moment should be captured without hesitation. ‘To be or not to be’ remains the question. Hamlet like situations are often encountered in life but to be alert & take the right step immediately is important.

‘Hum saath saath hai’ has only the two words common. With a galaxy of stars it is an expensive drama that showcases the epic, Ramayan in modern times. With few cinematic liberties it is the saga of the bonding of brothers, the step mom, the class difference, the jealousies & the idealism paramount.

‘Aapke saath’ with Anil Kapoor & Rati Agnihotri has 2 brothers loving the same woman. Smita Patil had a small role but she had been promised a meaty role later so appeared here. I liked the way Anil Kapoor carries himself. There wasn’t much there for him but being there & visible to the audience. His role in ‘Mashaal’ with Rati was much better. It has’ Chand chupta hai..’ among its songs.

Is it enough to be together? Saath saath! The visuals can be misleading. We see they are together, but are they? Really? We assume a lot from what we see, but the truth may be different. The work of the detectives is so difficult. To find if people are really what they are or merely posing or role playing for some gains?

Tracking the truth then. Happy togetherness!
