Gumrah

It literally means Astray. Jo raah bhatak jaye woh….. gumrah! The way is lost is gumrah. The star cast made it an excellent film. Ashok Kumar, Sunil Dutt & Mala Sinha have lived in their roles. Mala Sinha Gets married to Ashok Kumar, but still has feelings for her boyfriend, Sunil Dutt.

Mala’s sister dies & to take care of the children she marries her sister’s husband. Beautiful songs make it worth seeing. The opening song,’Aa bhi ja..’ is all about longing & meeting. ‘Aa ja aa ja re’ & ‘Aap aye to ‘ tell it all. Sunil Dutt is a singer,so there are many songs. The best one is’Chalo ek baar phir se ajnabi ban jaye hum dono’. The piano is a must.

I fully understand that circumstances made her to compromise but how can feelings be shifted overnight? When she is so involved with her boyfriend, they also plan to get married in near future, suddenly the family demands have to be met. But how can the affection, love be shifted to her sister’s husband. She must have looked upon him as her Jijaji & acceptance will take some time. I felt the title was wrong. How can she be labelled as gumrah when her path has been changed so suddenly.

Similar theme in “Bewafa” with Akshay Kumar & Kareena Kapoor was seen. Anil Kapoor & Sushmita Sen is the other pair. They have small kids. Suddenly Sushmita dies & Kareena marries her Jiju for the children. In today’s times when so many solutions can be worked out only this was the way? Plus Kareena could have let Akshay know about it! She doesn’t use any of the latest communication devices. He labels her “Bewafa”. Isn’t trust the main thing here. Why couldn’t he think!? Uski kuch majboori rahi hogi! But such half-baked themes do give us a lot of fodder for thought.

In ‘Hum aapke hain kaun?’ when Renuka Shahne has an accidental death, Madhuri Dixit was to be in a similar situation. But Mohnish Behl is alert & knows of her love being his younger brother,Salman Khan, so it gets avoided. ‘Masi bhi to pyar de sakti hain(Or Chachi!)

It is a remake of Rajashree’s own ‘Nadiya ke paar” which had Sachin & Sadhana Singh in the lead. Here Sachin’s elder brother just shrugs off the suggestion & that is the end. The earthy, rural setting is more believable than the chamak damak in ‘Hum aapke…’.

If the man loses his wife there is an option but the woman is known to fight it out on her own. She is rarely seen to go for a second marriage. Of course I am generalising here, exceptions prove the rule. In the society, the norms set for men & women are different so more restrictions are levied on the women. The rebellious ones do feel the heat & make their own way. Towards more leveling then! Happy watching!
