Love in Tokyo

It is a 1966 Hindi film starring Joy Mukherjee & Asha Parekh. Songs like “Sayonara” are famous even today. The location was Tokyo where these songs were picturised. What remains with us is the fashion. Ashaji has tied her hair with 2 beads held with a rubber band. Every cosmetic shop had them. Arundhati Roy’s ‘God of small things’ has a mention of the same. Afghan Snow & ‘Loe in tokyo’ was the only make up items available.

‘Mischievous kiss: Love in Tokyo’ is a romantic drama that takes place in Japan. It is the story of Kotoko, a sweet, spirited, stupid girl who falls in love with the most brilliant boy in school, Naoki. She is a student of ‘F Division’ & he is in ‘A Division’. She has been watching him & admiring him from the time he talked on stage. Finally she decides to write him a letter. Till this time the story is going on as per our expectation.

She decides to give this letter to him. She gives it to him, in front of the school gate in front of everybody! He looks at her & throws away the letter immediately. This was very unexpected. I could imagine her giving the letter quietly or outside his class or just anywhere but not in front of the whole crowd.

All such moments together make it an enjoyable watch. Just when she thinks it is all over, a shooting star hits her house & she has to move to her father’s friend’s house. It is Naoki’s house! Their fathers are good friends. His mother is very welcoming, she takes a liking to Kotoko & opens her arms literally. But Naoki & his younger brother dislike her. She has to live with it.

Her father realises the one sided love but cannot do anything about it. Naoki even refuses to walk together to school. He further forbids her to talk to him in school. He challenges her to stand in the ranking. At Least in first 100. She takes up this task wholeheartedly. But at home finds it difficult to concentrate. Naoki enters her room to find her sleeping on her books, bent over at the study table, with the night lamp on. He wakes her up & promises to teach her after school.

His mother is very supportive. She brings in snacks & quietly takes their photo. This photo is uploaded & Naoki is enraged. He believes this ia Kotoko’s work. She denies. The expressionless Naoki has done a good job. We are unaware of his feelings. All the excessive expressions are reserved for Kotoko & Naoki’s mother. They are full of life & excited over every small thing in life. Their positive attitude makes us fall for them. Naoki’s mother has wanted to have a daughter & she finds her daughter in Kotoko. She also wishes that Kotoko marries Naoki, so she wouldn’t leave. Are they optimistic or foolhardy? Naoki who is busy studying & doesn’t have time even for himself. When will he look at girls & wouldn’t he find someone other than Kotoko?

The two seasons span over both their studies, careers & the path they follow. What is interesting is, each episode has a one line story of its own. So anyone who leaves the show in the middle is not at a loss.

With his help she manages rank 100. It is a record for a F division student to compete & stand in the first 100. The value of education, good grades, admission I found everything is same from Tokyo to Timbuktu!

Happy Learning!
