Koshish ( Effort) is a 1972 film with Jaya Bhaduri & Sanjeev Kumar in the lead. Directed by Gulzar. It is considered a landmark film in Indian cinema. It was remade in Tamil in 1977. It is inspired by Japanese film,’Happiness of us alone’
The movie is about a deaf & mute couple. They meet, fall in love, marry & have a normal child. The joy There is a cameo by Dilip Kumar as himself. Kanu (Asrani) on a rainy day tries to rob at their place & the child follows him, gets killed. The movie right from the start tugs at the heart strings. We almost feel like going there & helping them out. When they are thus devastated so are we.
Very soon another son is born & things start looking up. Later on Jaya dies & Sanjeev kumar is left alone. His son has completed his education. Sanjeev Kumar’s boss calls him in the cabin & tells him about his daughter. He comes home & asks his son to meet her. His son refuses. He doesn’t want to marry a deaf girl. Sanjeev Kumar is livid. He shows his anger through his eyes & a few sounds made. I clearly remember him. Later his son relents & across the blue sky only hands are shown gesturing, ‘Jab mein tumse pahle mila tha… & Koshish continues.
Gulzar & Sanjeev Kumar bagged the national award for the film. Sanjeev Kumar wished to marry one of the leading ladies..Jaya Bhaduri or Hema Malini, but both were spoken for. So Haribhai Jariwala ie Sanjeev Kumar did not marry. Many others were ready but he wasn’t. The actors then had an image & principles that were dear to them. Compromises were unheard of. The films he has done till date show him as a dignified personality. ‘Trishul’ or ‘Sholay’ he did not shy away from the old man image. His white hair made him more real.
Koshish karne walon ki haar nahi hoti , nanhi chiti jab dana lekar chalti hai deewaron par kai baar phisalti hai chadkar girna, girkar chadna n akharta hai….. A time when I did not know the meaning of the word! But the hard times the couple go through were enough to make you feel for them. How difficult it is for those special people & we having every thing on the platter & are so unsatisfied !
Another good film next. Happy viewing!
