A 1976 film that had Amitabh in a romantic role. He has been known to be an action hero & yet here he had no action. All the songs were super hit.The plot was simple. Amit & Pooja love each other ,but the parents intervene . So they marry as per their parents wishes. They meet again after many years.A typical Yash Chopra film, with it’s usual twists.
There is a song sung by Amitabh in college. Main pal do pal ka shayar hun….By Sahir Ludhianvi & music by Khayyam. Pal do pal meri kahani hai ,pal do pal meri hasti hai pal do pal meri jawani hai…. now that is ok ,he knows about how long he will be in the memories ,but what comes next is just wonderful..! Mujhse pahle kitne shayar aaye aur aakar chale gaye,kuch aahe bhar kar laut gaye kuch nagme gaakar chale gaye..woh bhi ek pal ka kissa the ,mein bhi ek pal ka kissa hun kal tum se juda ho jaunga, vo aaj tumhara hissa hun…. the way he says that he will part is so special.
Kal aur aayenge nagmo ki khilti kaliyan chunne wale, mujhse behtar kehne wale tumse behtar sunne wale, kal koi mujhko yaad kare kyun..koi mujhko yaad kare,……accepting that there will be better people than you & me….is something that only Sahir can come up with…….masroof zamana mere liye, kun mast apna barbaad kare… he has not written that … sadiya yaad karegi etc. he is realistic & knows what will happen in future. His verses have that timelessness due to the thoughts they convey. From a person who took up writing because he didn’t find work as an actor.We wish to tell him,acting toh koi kar lega par isi shayari toh rah jati na…We are fortunate ones here.
Kabhi Kabhi….sometimes…the film had Amitabh Bachchan, Rakhee, Shashi Kapoor, Waheeda Rehman, Rishi Kapoor, Neetu Singh….Yash Chopra actually started this trend of multi starrers & beautiful Locales…in switzerland…..dream big! He directed second time after has mega success,Deewaar…another iconic film of his,where he had Amitabh & Shashi kapoor Pitted against each other. “Tumhare paas kya hai?”,mere paas Maa hai…is well known. For Kabhi Kabhi, Khayyam has the Filmfare for best music & Sahir has for best lyrics. Kabhi Kabhi mere dil mein….also got the best playback for singer Mukesh. Best screen play for Sagar Sarhadi.
The film was not an instant hit but as the songs became popular gradually the box office picked up.There was a similar case with his “Lamhe”….in spite of stars like Anil Kapoor & Sridevi,people did not like the age difference between their ages. It was not accepted that a girl of 20s will fall for her care taker,uncle in his 40s.The songs made for the money invested & gradually it picked up business. Yash Chopra has been persistent in his efforts,so his brand name carries off a film today.
So lets go and watch a big budget saga, happy viewing!
