Today when I searched top 25 couples in K drama I came across 2 couples in first five that I know.Fifth is the couple in “love in moonlight” & third is the couple in “Weightlifting fairy Kim bok joo”. Nam Joo hyuk & Lee Sung kyung are adorable.I had seen Nam in Moon Lovers & knew he could carry a good role in lead on his shoulders.Really being a good swimmer before he turned to acting both his shows The Bride of the water god & Kim Bok joo have showcased his swimming ability.In Kim Bok joo she is a weightlifter as the title suggests & he is a swimmer trying for the gold medal.The academy has various sports & upscale equipment.Nam ex-girlfriend is an athlete.She has unceremoniously dumped him to focus on her sport in the past but wants to get back together again.Her little tricks only help Kim bok joo to sort out her feelings for Nam.
They have known each other since childhood.He calls her ‘chubs’ she has always been chubby.Actually one of her friends has really put on weight for the show & it shows. Kim bok joo is really just using loose garments & generally easy going. She meets Nam’s elder brother a doctor & starts fantasizing. She even joins his weight loss program.As our hero gets wind of it he tries to correct the situation.Kim is going to compete in a competition when the doctor decides to watch her. The moment her name is announced she steps in to find the doctor among the audience.She wins there but is embarrassed because she wishes that her crush should see her as cute ,girly & not lifting weights all sweaty,face red & veins standing out.This she could tell Nam but not the doctor.
After pretty instances occur & she realises she has feelings for her childhood friend.What is adorable is his wait, his winning over her uncle & father.She is training away from home & not to be told about her dad’s operation.All of them gang up & make sure she is out of sight.Of course she comes to know of it & decides to work hard.When she lifts the weight & Nam watches on his cell,he shouts her father understands,who is lying on his hospital bed.
People are simple,circumstances tricky but resilience wins.She takes her first step to the academy away from home & supports her.He is yet to qualify & so cannot join her but there is no remorse only determination to do well next time.He conquers over his personal trauma & emerges stronger. Like Bong soon they do not have super powers but their power lies with each other.It also ends on a positive note.
Her two friends are her support system.Nam has one friend to encourage him & humour us.His parents who have taken care of him are his uncle & aunty.But they have been always there for him.His cousin the doctor -a pure soul unable to guess feelings.In the end all is well.I saw Bong Soon earlier so kept on expecting something more.I had seen Lee Sung kyung –a doctor herself, in Doctors pursuing another doctor,A chubby doctor( one of my friend called him Alaskan bear).Her long hair made her look different.
As they were dating at that time,everyone expected to see more of them.But we are still waiting.More about Nam Joo hyuk later. Happy viewing!
