Jab we met

A medley of language only gives us a clue that it is a love story. And it is indeed! Ashtavinayak pictures had launched a competition for a suitable name where the viewers fixed this name.It has 10 soulful songs, in an age & times like today we sat & gleefully enjoyed each one of them. You open this film at any point & it is watchable.

Imtiaz Ali has an illustrious father as Muzaffar Ali- whose vision is evident in Umrao Jaan.Imtiaz must have had it in his genes.’Rockstar’- a film which showed his courage, a theme not so normal in India,an aspirant as Ranbir Kapoor & an American actress like Nargis Fakhri were in a love story which had a lot of pain.In 2011, she got nominated as best female debut for filmfare award.Muzaffar Ali had managed to catapult Rekha as Umrao Jaan to a national award for her lead role.

In 2007,when we least expected, this film released in october got filmfare best actress award for Kareena Kapoor, best dialogue( Imtiaz Ali at his best!),best singer for Shreya Ghoshal & zee cine award for Kareena again! It was missing Shahid Kapoor at his best.I cannot think of any body else doing that role.

Aditya, a heart broken business tycoon encounters Geet,a bubbly Punjabi girl in a train & gets whisked into her crazy world.A rich boy & a poor ?– not so rich girl meet & so the story begins. The fresh look at it is amazing. The incidents are predictable yet manage to surprise us.Music is evergreen.Rashid khan in ‘ Aaoge jab tum’ is superb. The expressions on Kareena’s face keep on changing & so do our tears.By then we are in sync with her search for Anshuman & now she has nowhere to go.The journey takes us along with her & we are making sense of her choices.

At this point in their lives Kareena & Shahid were a couple, but differences appeared. Resolutely they finished shooting & what a finish! These actors are able to keep their emotions in check & emote so well. This film is a rare combination of a commercial cinema at its best.Without a comedy pair or side kicks it manages to hold itself. A rare glimpse of Dara Singh as her grandfather or Divya Seth as his mother are a delight.

As the story comes to an end it brings in complete closure. There are no loose ends to tie.Perhaps only who will marry Roop or what happens to Aushman? It is not only a good film but a film you can watch many times. Its everfresh. On a budget of 17 crores it manages to gross 71 crores. When we lament about the taste of viewers we should look up to good films like Jab we met! Happy viewing!
